Wayland Dean showed great promise as a young pitcher playing for the Louisville Colonels. The New York Giants paid $50,000 in January 1924 for the 22 year old right hander. In his first season with the Giants, Wayland started 20 games . He won 6 games and lost 12 and had a 5.01 ERA. The Giants won the National League Pennant with an 93 and 60 record. They faced off against the Washington Senators in the World Series

Game one of the series was in Griffith Stadium in Washington and the Giants won an 12 inning battle 4-3. The next game, the Giants came from behind and tied the score with 2 runs in the top of the ninth making the it 3-3. But the Senators scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Moving to the Polo Grounds in New York for game three, the Giants won 6-4. The Senators took the next game with Wayland finally getting a chance on the mound in the eight inning. With the Senators leading 5-2, Dean gave up 2 runs on 3 straight singles before settling down to retire the next 3 batters. He also held the Senators scoreless in the ninth inning with one strike out and two ground outs. The Senators won the game 7-4 and later the series 4-3. Dean did not make another appearance in the series.

In 1925, Dean started 14 games and appeared in 33 games. He won 10 games and loss 7 and established a 4.64 ERA. During the off season, Dean was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies along with fellow pitcher Jack Bentley. In Philadelphia, Wayland became a sarting pitcher but did not fair too well. In 26 games starting and 7 games in relief, he had 8 wins and 16 losses with an ERA of 4.91. The Phillies hung with him the following year until June 1927 when the Cubs purchased him. He only played in 2 games in Philly and 2 games in Chicago before he had to quit baseball due to illness.

On April 11, 1930, Wayland Dean passed away at the young age of 28 in his parents home in Huntington, WV from tuberculosis. In four yeas of Major League baseball, Dean had 24 wins and 36 losses with a lifetime ERA of 4.87
